The two-center shell model for the fission of metallic clusters

Abstract: We calculate potential energies for charged and neutral jellium clusters which fragment in two pieces, in the framework of the liquid drop model plus Strutinsky shell obtained from the two-centre harmonic oscillator. We consider the symmetric fragmentation of Na 42 ++, Na 18 ++, and Na 38. Good agreement is found with results obtained by self-consistent methods, which are much more involved.
